Tragedy has struck the small town of George after a construction site, where 75 workers were present, collapsed; the helpers have started doing what they can, to save as many lives as possible.

George, South Africa (07 May 2024) – On the afternoon of the 6th of May 2024, a multi-storey construction site collapsed on Victoria Street in George, Western Cape. The tragic event has been reported by the George Municipality, and they have continued to update the public since then.

The latest update has included new information for the public who are wanting to lend a helping hand to the men and women who are working tirelessly to shift the rubble and find the construction workers that are still missing.

At the time of the tragic accident, 75 workers were within the building site. At the time of reporting, 27 workers had been removed from the rubble and sadly, six had passed away. There are still 48 people unaccounted for.

Emergency personnel from as far as the City of Cape Town and surrounding Disaster Management Services were dispatched to attend to the site.

There are three teams working at various parts of the site to cover as much ground as possible. Families and friends have gathered at the main foyer of the George Municipality building where they are awaiting updates on their loved ones.

Volunteers have also started helping wherever possible. Municipal Manager Dr Gratz expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the organisations and individuals who have sprung into action to assist with the rescue operation. However, the public has been asked to please avoid accident the area as space is needed to continue rescue efforts.

“We thank everyone who has volunteered of their time or provided sustenance to the rescue personnel. We continue to keep the families, friends and colleagues of those involved in this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers,” she said.

For those wanting to help, the teams need drinking water, Lucozade, wine gums, or any food for the emergency services while they are on site. Delivery of these items can be taken to the tent site via Ivy Street at 79 Victoria St, Delplan Consulting which is being manned by Gift of the Givers and Herman Pienaar of LoveGeorge.

Safety equipment is also needed. Safety equipment including helmets, safety goggles, headlamps and construction gloves are needed. If anyone can assist, please deliver to GRDM Fire Station on Pearl Road, Tamsui Industria.

A charity fund has also been established by the municipality to cover any additional costs that arise for the continued rescue efforts. Donations can be made to:
