Kindness Like Confetti (KLC) have launched a campaign to help bring the end of period poverty to 500 young ladies in the Gauteng area.

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 May 2024) – Period poverty is rife in South Africa, where families have to choose between putting a meal on the table versus purchasing menstrual hygiene products. In these cases, food always wins and young ladies going through their regular cycles, have to make other plans or skip school. Kindness Like Confetti (KLC) is working to end period poverty for 500 young ladies this World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The day was initiated in 2013 by a German-based organisation, WASH United, as a way to raise awareness for young women who had limited access to good hygienic options.

For several years, KLC has run their “Pad Princess” project as a way to offer an alternative menstrual kit which is reusable and manageable for rural and informal-based young ladies with limited access too fresh water and clean toilets.

This year, the team are hoping to end period poverty for 500 young ladies by providing their useful kits to each young lady. This is their biggest goal every set for the Pad Princess project.

They have identified two primary schools so far and as they reach more donations, they will add more schools. The grade 7 classes at Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School in Azaadville and P S Fourie Primary School in Eersterus.

Speaking to Claire Duval, she shared that KLC are hoping to partner with various companies to help them reach this massive, life changing goal.

They are collecting funds or donations for the buckets, including MAQ soap bars/buckets/vinegar/reusable pads

“We would love corporates to get behind us and sponsor buckets.

The donation can benefit their CSI and and 18A can be issued for any monetary or item donation (MAQ soap bars / buckets / vinegar / reusable pads)

The KLC / Pad Princess team will happily host a packing day for contributing companies and we welcome them to join us when doing the handout at the schools – this has great impact.”

You can find out how to get involved here or email the team here for more information. Every donation will have the power to change a young lady’s life in ways one cannot even begin to imagine!
